A Step-by-Step Guide: The Role of CompEx in Hazardous Area Operations

CompEx Course

Competency to work in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres:

Potentially Explosive Atmospheres, known as “Hazardous Areas” are one where sizeable quantity of flammable gases, vapours, mists and combustible dusts are present or expected to present are stored/processed.

A specialised approach is required with sufficient level of knowledge, skill and ability to work in “Potentially Explosive Atmospheres”.

Competency Assessment Schemes:

Various Courses are offered as national skill qualification only.

CompEx Certification is accepted globally by all leading oil and gas industries operating in onshore/offshore.

CompEx training and assessment scheme validates the competency requirements of various group of personnel working in hazardous areas.

About 100,000 CompEx-certified professionals are working worldwide in different work disciplines.

Origin of CompEx:

The tragic event of “Piper Alpha” offshore platform rig enraged by fire and explosions blew the rig caused death of 167 persons and the entire platform reduced to ashes on July 6, 1988.

Findings have led to the lack of personal competency in hazardous areas and recommendations have demanded a personnel competency gauging scheme for working in oil & gas. Initially CompEx course was developed for E&I personnel only and later CompEx courses were developed to all sorts of workplaces where flammable/combustible or explosive substances are present.

What CompEx covers:

CompEx courses are covered under the relevant parts of IEC 60079 series, designed for various group of professionals in Electrical, Instrumentation, ICSS, Mechanical, Designers and Responsible Persons.

It covers selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of explosion protected (“Ex”) equipment, design aspects of “Ex” equipment, understanding hazardous area classification, standards and directives governing hazardous areas and equipment, marking and certification of “Ex” equipment.

CompEx validates the personnel competency as remains current.

Who Should Attend:

Technicians, Supervisors, Engineers and Managers involved in design, selection, installation and inspection of “Ex” equipment, in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Industry Covered:
  • Oil & gas exploration
  • Petroleum refinery
  • Petroleum products storage yard
  • Gas processing & filling stations
  • Petrochemical industry
  • Chemicals & Solvents Manufacturing
  • Pharmaceutical
What Elite Oil & Gas offer:

Elite Oil & Gas offer CompEx “Ex Foundation”, “Ex Foundation Plus”, Ex01 – Ex04 (Gas & Vapour), Ex12 (Application Design Engineer) courses.

CompEx Training
Strength of CompEx:
  • Empower personnel working or aspiring to work in potentially explosive atmospheres to stand above the rest.
  • Provides know-how techniques to deal with various types of explosion-protected equipment.
  • An international license to enter and stay competent to work in land or offshore oil and gas installations.

CompEx is a key

CompEx stands for Competence in Explosive Atmosphere is globally recognized certification scheme for the personnel working in potentially explosive atmospheres.

It equips professionals working in environments where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust are present with the knowledge and skills needed to operate the installation safely.

Technical personnel working in hazardous industries like oil and gas sectors where safety is a top priority, CompEx Training might be essential for those involved in selection, installation, inspection and maintenance of explosion protected equipment.

With increasing emphasis on safety and compliance, CompEx certification is critical in protecting both employees and businesses from fire and explosion risks.

From electricians and engineers to inspectors and technicians, a wide range of professionals across various parts of oil and gas industries can benefit from this training.

CompEx is a key to open new avenues to work in a challenging environment where oil & gas is explored, processed, stored and transported.

Elite Oil & Gas India offers a 5-day course in Chennai, inside Crescent University Campus in Vandalur (close to Kilambakkam Central Bus Terminus)..

Learning objectives and their outcomes addresses  the specific challenges faced by the professionals working in oil and gas installations.

Competence assessments in the CompEx scheme plays a key role in reducing risks and preventing accidents in the workplace.

CompEx Foundation is a stepping stone

Target Group: Personnel with less or no working experience in explosive atmospheres.

Personnel willing to work or like to get relocated into oil and gas world, can attend 1 day “Foundation Course” (ExF) or 2 days “Foundation Plus” (ExF+) to groom themselves to fit into the industry.

ExF, a one day course provides an overview of the characteristics and properties of combustible substances like gas, vapour, dust and the hazardous areas where combustible substances are present or expected to present.

ExF+ a two days course hands-on practicum in addition to one day ExF course.  Practicum involves selection of Ex certified equipment, preparation and making off glands, installation and wiring as per the technical document provided.

ExF+ enhances the working ability by encompassing the person’s ability to use/apply Ex documents as part of the competency.

CompEx is Complementing the business

Near misses, untoward incidents and accidents are happening in oil and gas industries mainly due to safety breaches and human error as a result of incompetent workforce.

Competency is bundled with components of “Knowledge + Skill + Performance Ability” to safely act and work in potentially explosive atmospheres.

CompEx competency assessment system is designed with appropriate level of training, coaching and hands-on practical modules meeting the relevant standards of ISO/IEC.

Training and assessment modules were designed by industrial experts and proven for its quality over 3 decades.

Competency training of personnel is a vital part of business investment, asset insurance and business continuity and will pay dividend.

Efforts are being taken by industrial leaders and governments to avoid fire, explosions, lost time injury or fatal accidents in workplace. In spite of all the efforts right from “Piper Alpha” fire and explosions (July, 1988), “Deep Water Horizon” (April, 2010) and many more, petroleum fires are happening.

A small investment can save billions.

Theme: Stay Competent to avert fire and save investments

A small miss out in dealing with explosion-protected equipment can cost human lives and damage to plants and machinery.

Saving lives of the workforce and the cost investment is the essence of CompEx training.

Stay competent to contribute to the process and functional safety of hazardous operations through knowledge and skill acquired in CompEx training.

Objective of Competency training is to protect oneself, others working in the vicinity and to safeguard the operations.

Competency in HAZARDOUS AREA SAFETY where specialist approach is a requirement.

“CompEx” a Comprehensive Licence to Installation & Inspection

Equipment for hazardous areas is designed with special features, known as “Explosion Protected” equipment, which are tested and certified to relevant standards and directives.

Special design features of explosion-protected equipment need to be maintained throughout the life cycle of the equipment.

Technicians engaged in the installation of “Ex” equipment should possess a minimum knowledge of types of protection and particular techniques required to select & install such equipment, without damaging its special features.

Special features can be preserved through regular, periodic inspection and maintenance.

CompEx training imparts knowledge on special design features and construction of each method of protection used in hazardous areas. Inspections carried out in accordance with IEC standards on “Ex” equipment will reveal the integrity of special features associated with each method of protection. Reports generated as outcomes of inspections will be used to analyze the deterioration rate.

Only trained personnel can understand the methods, techniques, and special features of “Ex” equipment. Otherwise, its original certification may become invalid.

NOTE: Combustible dusts are not covered in our CompEx course, hence any writeup on dust is irrelevant.
